My relationship with Co-op Market has a short history, but the story that leads me to the path to natural living starts about 15 years ago, long before I ever thought about needing anti-wrinkle cream that was animal-friendly and far before I started feeding my horses herbs. In fact, it was before I even HAD many horses to feed. I was a few years into my career at that point and a mother called to ask about riding lessons for her daughter. We chatted for a bit, then scheduled a lesson.

Fast forward through a ton of years of great memories horse showing, developing a friendship, and this client moving across the country to follow a career opportunity. There are 1,000 pages of stories I could write about those 15 years but we’ll skip ahead to how this special relationship changed my business and my opinion on healthy living.

One fall day in October of 2018, I sent out a text asking people for sponsorships for my winter riding team. A few minutes later I got a phone call from America’s heartland, it was my friend who had moved across the country.

“Well I don’t have any interest in sponsoring your riding team,” the familiar voice said, “but I'll tell you what does interest me, and I can’t believe I didn’t think of it sooner…”

Co-op Market believed their herbs (from parent company Frontier Co-op) were a natural way to supplement diets, both human and equine. They had been talking about how to message this to their customers,

“And now,” she said, “I know just how we are going to do that.”

That was how I got started with Co-op Market. Serendipity for sure. A series of very happy accidents that lead me to a wonderful company that changed the course of my life.

One might argue that, without any previous knowledge of natural living and clean, quality products, I’d be happy using any old herb. For my horses and in my new, healthier lifestyle, that would be a tough argument... I came to Co-op Market on accident but I continue to purchase and represent their products because it is truly a remarkable company.

So many things about Co-op Market impressed me, from the quality of the products to the integrity and ethics the entire organization is bound to. They’ve even had on-site childcare and an organic Cafe since the late 1970s!

According to Frontiercoop.com, each year the company gives back 4% of its pre-tax profits to causes and organizations around the world that inspire wellness in communities where products are produced. I’ve learned how Frontier Co-op has trained farmers around the world to grow organically to protect themselves and the environment from toxic chemicals.  Through the Well Earth sourcing program, Frontier boosts employment and the local environment by helping maintain and develop partnerships in poor, isolated, communities. They help with basics like clean water, roads, schools and medical care. Most recent projects include a dental clinic in Guatemala and a project allowing Vietnamese children to attend school.

There are 1,000 reasons why I chose Frontier, from their position with Fair Trade (Frontier introduced the first Fair Trade Certified spices to the U.S. market in 2009), to the quality control, and the way they treat their employees and customers. After I visited Norway, IA, I gained a new appreciation for the people and products I was representing.  The relationship that originally started with a phone call and the promise to try out some products, had led me to the doorstep of a place that was literally changing lives around the world. I was in awe over the stories of where my cinnamon comes from and the incredible journey it took to get the BEST spearmint in the country. On the plane ride home, I felt truly blessed to get to be a part of a place that was so special.

One simple phone call and now I’m full-fledged living a healthier life, feeling very confident that every purchase I make from the Co-op Market is not only fulfilling my health goals but also contributing to something much bigger than my everyday living.

A funny coincidence brought me to the Co-op Market. The dedication they show towards customers, employees and the general well-being of people around the world, will keep me a customer for a very long time.
