Ingredients
- 4 cups water
- 2 to 4 tablespoons Frontier Co-op® ground herbs and spices, or 1 cup cut-and-sifted or whole herbs and spices
- 1 tablespoon Frontier Co-op® Cream of Tartar or white vinegar, as mordant (optional, but will help colors penetrate the eggshell)
- 4-6 eggs, washed to remove any coating (use raw for hot bath, hard-boiled for cold)
Directions
- In an enamel or glass (not aluminum) pot, bring water, herbs or spices, and mordant to a boil.
- Add eggs and reduce heat to a simmer.
- Cook for about 15 minutes, remove from heat, cover and let sit another 15 minutes or more, until desired color is achieved.
- Remove eggs, gently rinse in lukewarm water, and let air dry.
- In an enamel or glass (not aluminum) pot, make a dye bath by bringing water, herbs or spices, and mordant to a boil.
- Simmer, covered, until water is deeply colored, anywhere from 1/2 to 2 hours.
- Strain liquid and let cool. Add hard-boiled eggs to dye, and let soak until desired color is reached. You can even soak overnight in the refrigerator, if you like.
